VIII edition of the

Dolphin Day

Our customary meeting with the schools of Ischia will take place on the 14th of May at 10 am in Negombo, Lacco Ameno, Ischia.

The waters of Ischia are protected for their particular biodiversity. The Marine Protected Area of the islands of Ischia, Procida and Vivara is the first and only one in the Mediterranean sea to include a pelagic zone besides the coastal protected area.

This pelagic area is located on the heads of the canyons of the submarine canyon system of Cuma. This is a particular productive area of the Mediterranean sea which hosts so much food that seven different species of cetaceans can here be sighted.

Common dolphin, Delphinus delphis, sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus and bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops truncatus, are the most threatened species.

On the 23rd March 2009 at 3.30 pm Domenico di Meglio passed away.

I haven’t been able to talk to Katia yet. I’m sure she would have liked to write something personally, but she can’t because dragged around the world by her job. I will write then, I feel I have to do it… we lost an extraordinary person, strong, spotless, rough but also humorous, full of energy and true principals. Domenico gave his best to his journalistic mission, so that he was himself identified with the “Il Golfo”, the newspaper he directed for several years. His editorial “Sussurri e Grida” was the very first thing to read in the morning in Ischia. He made allowance to no one, himself and his family first. He never built up his house, but he offered shelter to many people and animals. He was a rare, independent man.

He always believed in what we were doing for dolphins here in Ischia, even when we were young and inexperienced. He offered us unlimited space on his newspaper, helped us growing. For this we will always be grateful. And we will be there always to remember his free and irreverent self
